I SCREAM FACTORY

Last night I went to the I Scream Factory's show at Hoxton Gallery where my friend John was exhibiting some pieces; I helped with his photographs, getting covered in buttercream and sprinkles in the process...! I haven't been to Hoxton Gallery before, it's on Kingsland Rd and the space is an old archway so has an amazing curved roof and exposed bricks.

The show was based on a quote from a Jim Jarmusch film and considted of photographs, a film projection and some installations all based around ice cream. It's on until 31st August if you want to catch it...

Inspired by a segment of Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law (1986) in which Bob Benigni, an Italian cellmate, quotes from his “book of English” – “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice-cream”. This line becomes a maniacal recitation. Ice Cream, a fast-melting delicacy, seems to embody various dimensions of life itself. Delicate yet cold, and of ephemeral pleasure... and those who eat it, know it.

TERRARIUMS

I recently entered the Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search, with a brief based on terrariums - I didn't get into the shortlist but it was nice to get a chance to make some new work. I created the repeating pattern above using illustrations from my entry.

I'm really into patterns (and hands!) at the moment... I really want to print some fabric with these to make clothes :)

MARKETING FOR DESIGNERS EVENT

On Thursday I went along to 'Marketing for Designers' event, organised by Today/Tomorrow in Camden. I was umming and ahhing whether to go as it was raining and miserable... (SO lazy) but in the end I did. The space is really cool and after getting in and attaching our stickers - me, 'Illustrator' - we had a talk from graphic designer Yoni Alter about his work, followed by panel Q&A with him and an art director and interior designer.

Although not all directly relevant to me, some of the advice was great and it was nice to hear that established artists and designers still don't really have much of a marketing plan and are winging it like the rest of us!

I got chatting to someone there and we're hopefully going to attend a few more talks together soon :) It's made me realise that I need to go to a lot more events like this and get out there meeting more artists.
